He is a young gay who runs away from home to seek adventure and excitement as a seaman. He does indeed find adventure, though practically more than he had hoped for. On the island, begins to wonder about many things. Eventually he makes many discoveries. Some strange, some horrible. But though e realthing, he keeps his faith in God.
